Budget Minolta A-mount autofocus SLR from 1994, affordable film shooting with lenses that also work on Sony Alpha.
The Minolta 500si is an entry-level autofocus 35mm SLR from 1994, part of Minolta's si-series that offered the A-mount autofocus system to budget-conscious photographers. The 500si provided a capable platform for Minolta's excellent A-mount lenses at a price point designed to compete with Canon's EOS Rebel and Nikon's N50 series.
The camera features a wide-area autofocus system, predictive focus tracking for moving subjects, and fourteen-segment honeycomb metering for accurate exposure across varied lighting conditions. Multiple exposure modes from full auto through program, aperture-priority, shutter-priority, and manual give photographers complete creative flexibility.
Build quality uses lightweight polycarbonate construction with an ergonomic grip that handles well with small to medium A-mount lenses. The built-in pop-up flash provides fill and indoor lighting, and the camera accepts Minolta's program flash units for more demanding lighting situations with full TTL metering support.
The Minolta 500si offers excellent value on the used market, particularly because Minolta A-mount lenses are compatible with Sony Alpha DSLR and mirrorless cameras via adapters. This cross-system compatibility adds long-term value to A-mount glass purchased alongside the 500si for film shooting.
