Minolta's wider-starting budget zoom — the AF 28-80mm for A-mount, an improvement over the 35-80mm.
The Minolta AF 28-80mm f/4-5.6 is an updated budget standard zoom for Minolta A-mount cameras, improving on the earlier 35-80mm with a wider 28mm starting point. The 28-80mm range became the standard for kit zooms throughout the late 1990s and 2000s. It provided adequate wide-to-short-telephoto coverage for entry-level A-mount users.
Optical performance is basic but functional. Centre sharpness is acceptable when stopped down. The wider 28mm starting point provides a more useful wide-angle perspective than the earlier 35-80mm. Variable aperture limits low-light capability. Multiple versions exist across the Minolta and Sony production history with minor improvements.
Minolta A mount (Sony A mount compatible). Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 195 grams — lightweight. Build quality is basic plastic. Compatible with all Sony A-mount bodies. The A-mount system is discontinued but the lens adapts to Sony E-mount via LA-EA adapters. No image stabilisation — benefits from Sony body stabilisation.
Very cheap on the used market — often under £15. Check for smooth AF and zoom operation. A marginal improvement over the 35-80mm but still a basic kit lens. Not worth deliberate purchase — virtually any other A-mount standard zoom is a better investment. The Sony DT 18-55mm SAM is the modern equivalent.
