Minolta's compact constant-aperture zoom — the AF 35-70mm f/4 for early A-mount systems.
The Minolta AF 35-70mm f/4 is a compact constant-aperture standard zoom for Minolta A-mount cameras. The constant f/4 aperture was a modest but practical feature — providing consistent exposure throughout the limited zoom range. As one of the earlier Minolta AF zooms, it paired well with the pioneering Minolta 7000 and 9000 AF SLRs.
Optical performance is adequate for the era. Centre sharpness is acceptable. The constant f/4 is the main advantage over variable-aperture competitors. The limited 35-70mm range covers normal to short telephoto — functional but not as versatile as later 28-80mm designs. Autofocus uses the body's screw-drive motor. SMC coatings help with contrast.
Minolta A mount (Sony A compatible). Filter thread is 49mm — compact. Weight is approximately 190 grams — very lightweight. Build quality is basic but functional. The constant aperture and compact size were practical advantages. Compatible with all Sony A-mount bodies and adaptable to E-mount via LA-EA adapters.
Very cheap on the used market. Check AF and smooth zoom. The constant f/4 is the only distinguishing feature. Not recommended for deliberate purchase — better A-mount standard zooms exist. Only of interest bundled with a camera body or for testing A-mount AF operation.
