Minolta's budget standard zoom — the basic AF 35-80mm for entry-level A-mount cameras.
The Minolta AF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 is a budget standard zoom from Minolta's A-mount lineup, supplied with entry-level AF SLRs from the early 1990s. Covering a modest 35-80mm range, it provided basic standard zoom coverage without the wide-angle starting point of later 28-80mm designs. A no-frills kit lens designed to meet a price point.
Optical performance is basic. Centre sharpness is acceptable when stopped down. The narrow 35-80mm range limits versatility compared to later wider-starting kit zooms. Variable aperture limits low-light use. Adequate for casual daytime photography and learning but not suitable for demanding work. The AF motor is functional but slow.
Minolta A mount (Sony A mount compatible). Filter thread is 49mm. Weight is approximately 175 grams — very light. Build quality is basic all-plastic construction. The 35mm starting point is noticeably tighter than the 28mm equivalent that became standard in later kit zooms. Compatible with Sony A-mount bodies and adaptable to E-mount via LA-EA adapters.
Almost worthless on the used market — often free with camera body purchases. Check for smooth AF and zoom operation. Not recommended for purchase. The limited 35-80mm range and basic optics make virtually any alternative a better choice. Only of relevance bundled with a camera body.
