Minolta's budget telephoto — the basic AF 70-210mm f/4.5-5.6 for A-mount.
The Minolta AF 70-210mm f/4.5-5.6 is a basic telephoto zoom for Minolta A-mount cameras. Different from the celebrated 'beercan' f/3.5-4.5 (ID 3729), this slower version was the more affordable alternative. Variable f/4.5-5.6 aperture limits low-light use. Basic autofocus. Part of Minolta's entry-level AF lens range.
Optical performance is basic. The slow variable aperture provides less light than the 'beercan' version. Sharpness is acceptable in the centre. Adequate for daylight telephoto work. The screw-drive AF depends on body motor. Benefits from Sony body SteadyShot on compatible A-mount cameras. Not designed for demanding use.
Minolta A mount (Sony A compatible). Filter thread is 49mm — very compact. Weight is approximately 280 grams — very light. Build quality is basic consumer. The compact 49mm filter and light weight are the main advantages. The A-mount system is discontinued. Adaptable to E-mount via LA-EA adapters.
Very cheap on the used market. Not recommended for deliberate purchase — the 'beercan' version is significantly better. Only of interest bundled with a camera body. The compact size and weight are the only practical advantages. Modern alternatives are dramatically better.
