Minolta's Dynax 5xi — mid-range xi-series autofocus SLR, fully electronic, Minolta A mount, 1992.
The Minolta Dynax 5xi, from 1992, was a mid-range body in the third-generation xi-series of Minolta autofocus SLRs, sitting between the entry models and the 7xi. It was branded Dynax in Europe and Maxxum and Alpha elsewhere. It offered a fuller set of xi-series features than the entry bodies while keeping the Minolta A mount.
It is a 35mm single-lens-reflex on the Minolta A bayonet with body-integral autofocus. It offers program, aperture-priority, shutter-priority and manual exposure with through-the-lens metering, and is a fully electronic body whose shutter and motorised transport both depend on battery power, with an LCD for settings. Like the rest of the xi line it emphasises automated operation with manual control available.
The 5xi suits general and travel photography for a user who wants more exposure control than the entry xi bodies without moving to the 7xi. It handles as a capable, automated all-rounder with the Minolta A lens range behind it. Its limits are the automation-led interface and its complete reliance on electronics.
On the used market, inspect the LCD for missing segments and confirm the electronic shutter fires accurately. Test autofocus, the meter and the exposure modes, and run the motorised advance and rewind. Check the foam light seals for perishing, clean the battery contacts, confirm the correct battery, and note the fully electronic body will not operate without power.
