Minolta's classic fast fifty — the MC Rokkor-PG f/1.4 is one of the finest vintage standard primes.
The Minolta MC Rokkor-PG 50mm f/1.4 is one of the most celebrated vintage standard primes in photography. Produced from the early 1970s for the Minolta SR mount system, it was the flagship fifty in Minolta's lineup. The PG designation indicates a 7-element, 5-group optical formula. Its reputation for beautiful rendering has made it a cult favourite among vintage lens enthusiasts.
Wide open at f/1.4, the lens produces images with a distinctive warm character, gentle glow, and smooth background rendering that many photographers find exceptionally pleasing. Sharpness is good in the centre from f/1.4 and excellent across the frame by f/4. The Rokkor multi-coating provides good flare resistance. Colour rendition is warm and slightly amber.
Minolta SR mount (also called MC mount), manual focus. Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 245 grams — compact and well-balanced. Build quality is excellent with all-metal construction and a beautifully smooth helicoid focus action. Several versions exist with minor optical and cosmetic changes — all are optically excellent.
Popular on the used market with prices rising as vintage lens appreciation grows. Check for radioactive thorium yellowing in the glass — some versions use thoriated elements that develop a yellow tint over time, correctable with UV exposure. Adapts beautifully to Sony E-mount via simple SR-to-E adapters. A genuine classic.
