Minolta's compact 100mm telephoto prime — a sharp, affordable portrait lens from the MD era.
The Minolta MD Rokkor 100mm f/2.5 is a compact manual focus telephoto prime from Minolta's MD-mount era. Providing a classic short telephoto perspective ideal for portraiture and candid photography, it continued Minolta's tradition of producing high-quality, affordable primes. The f/2.5 aperture provides useful background separation at portrait distances.
Optical performance is very good. Sharpness is excellent from f/2.5 — this lens is genuinely sharp wide open, making it a reliable portrait tool. Bokeh is smooth and pleasant, characteristic of Minolta's well-regarded telephoto prime designs. The Rokkor multi-coating provides good contrast and flare resistance. Chromatic aberration is minimal.
Minolta MD mount, manual focus. Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 265 grams — very compact for a 100mm lens. Build quality is solid metal construction with a smooth focus helicoid typical of the MD series. Several versions exist across the Rokkor and MD naming conventions — all are optically excellent.
Available on the used market at reasonable prices. Check for haze, fungus, and smooth focus ring operation. An excellent vintage portrait lens that adapts well to mirrorless cameras via MD adapters. Often overlooked in favour of the more famous 58mm f/1.4 Rokkor, but this 100mm delivers outstanding portrait results in its own right.
