Nikon's budget mirrorless — the 1 S1, 10MP 1-inch, Nikon 1 mount, no viewfinder, 2013.
The Nikon 1 S1, released in 2013, was the most affordable entry-level body in Nikon's Nikon 1 mirrorless system, positioned below the J-series for first-time interchangeable-lens buyers. It shared the compact 1-inch sensor format of the whole Nikon 1 line.
This is a mirrorless camera on the Nikon 1 mount, using a 1-inch sensor of roughly 10 megapixels, a lower count than the J3 of the same year. It has no viewfinder and is composed on the rear screen, in keeping with its budget positioning. It offers fast autofocus and quick burst shooting from the small sensor and records Full HD video. Native Nikon 1 lenses are compact to match.
The 1 S1 suited beginners, general and travel photographers wanting the smallest and cheapest way into the Nikon 1 system. The 1-inch sensor and lower resolution trade low-light performance and detail for size and price, while the roughly 2.7x crop factor extends reach. As with the J-series, composing on the screen without a viewfinder can be difficult in bright conditions.
As a budget compact mirrorless body, check the sensor for dust and marks and test the rear screen for dead or stuck pixels. Request the shutter actuation count, inspect the card and battery door latches, and confirm the EN-EL20 battery holds charge with a charger included. Because the Nikon 1 system was discontinued, native lenses and support are scarce and resale is firmly budget.
