Nikon's ultra-wide autofocus prime — the 14mm f/2.8D ED for extreme wide-angle photography.
The Nikon AF Nikkor 14mm f/2.8D ED is Nikon's ultra-wide autofocus prime for F-mount, providing a dramatic 114-degree field of view on full frame. At 14mm, it was one of the widest autofocus rectilinear primes available. The ED element ensures excellent chromatic aberration control at this extreme wide angle. Used for dramatic landscape, architecture, and astrophotography.
Optical performance is very good. Sharpness is excellent in the centre and good in the corners when stopped down. The rectilinear design keeps straight lines straight — unlike fisheye alternatives. The f/2.8 aperture is fast for an ultra-wide, enabling astrophotography. ED glass provides excellent colour correction. Distortion is well-controlled for 14mm.
Nikon F mount with D-type coupling. The bulbous front element prevents standard filter use — rear gel filter holder is the only option. Weight is approximately 670 grams. Build quality is professional grade. Screw-drive AF requires a body-mounted motor. Not compatible with entry-level Nikon D3xxx/D5xxx for AF.
Available on the used market at moderate prices. Check the bulbous front element for damage and AF accuracy. The f/2.8 speed at 14mm makes it useful for astrophotography where the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 is the budget alternative. A capable ultra-wide that served Nikon professionals for years. The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 is the zoom alternative.
