Nikon's professional fast telephoto — the AF 180mm f/2.8D ED for sports and portraits.
The Nikon AF Nikkor 180mm f/2.8D IF-ED was released in 1994 as Nikon's professional fast telephoto prime. At f/2.8, it provides excellent subject isolation and low-light capability at 180mm. The IF (Internal Focusing) design keeps the barrel length constant. ED glass ensures exceptional chromatic aberration control. A favourite of sports and portrait photographers.
Optical performance is excellent. Sharpness is outstanding from f/2.8 — this lens was known for its exceptional wide-open performance. The ED element controls colour fringing superbly. Bokeh is smooth and beautiful. The 180mm focal length provides more compression than 135mm and is more handheld-friendly than 200mm. AF is fast using the body's screw-drive motor.
Nikon F mount with D-type coupling. Filter thread is 72mm. Weight is approximately 760 grams — moderate for a fast telephoto. Build quality is professional grade with solid metal construction. IF design means the barrel doesn't extend during focusing. Compatible with Nikon teleconverters for extended reach. No VR stabilisation.
Available on the used market at reasonable prices. Check AF accuracy and clean optics. One of Nikon's finest short telephoto primes — the wide-open sharpness is genuinely impressive even by modern standards. The lack of VR is the main limitation. The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR provides zoom flexibility but this prime offers superior sharpness.
