Nikon's budget body-drive standard zoom — basic 28-80mm D-type for film and early digital Nikon bodies.
The Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6D is a budget standard zoom from 1999 for Nikon F-mount bodies. The D designation provides distance information for improved metering. Body-driven screw-drive AF requires cameras with built-in AF motors.
Optical quality is basic — acceptable centre sharpness but soft at edges. Variable f/3.5-5.6 aperture is slow. The D-chip communication adds value for metering on compatible bodies. No VR stabilisation. Adequate for casual use on film bodies of its era.
Nikon F mount with 58mm filter thread. Approximately 195g — lightweight. Full-frame coverage. Plastic construction. Minimum focus distance 40cm. No AF on entry-level DSLRs without built-in AF motor. Multiple versions exist.
Very cheap used — essentially free. Only works for AF on bodies with built-in AF motor. Any modern AF-S kit zoom is dramatically better. Check for smooth zoom action. A throwaway lens for the most budget-constrained or film camera users.
