Nikon's older 300mm f/4 — pre-AF-S with ED glass and body-driven AF for F-mount.
The Nikon AF Nikkor 300mm f/4 ED is an earlier version of Nikon's 300mm f/4 telephoto prime, predating the AF-S and PF versions. It provides 300mm reach at f/4 with ED glass for chromatic aberration control — a competent telephoto for its era.
Optically good — sharp from f/5.6 with ED glass controlling chromatic aberration effectively. Body-driven screw AF — speed depends on camera body. No VR stabilisation. The f/4 aperture at 300mm provides useful reach for wildlife and sports.
Nikon F mount with 72mm filter thread. Approximately 1260g. Full-frame coverage. No VR stabilisation. Body-driven AF. ED glass. Minimum focus distance approximately 250cm.
Available used very cheaply. The AF-S 300mm f/4D IF-ED added AF-S motor. The PF 300mm f/4E cut weight dramatically. This early version is functional but outclassed. Body-drive AF limits it to cameras with AF motors. Check for smooth focus operation.
