Nikon's original AF 35-70mm f/2.8 — early non-D push-pull version without distance chip.
The Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8 is the original non-D version of Nikon's professional constant f/2.8 standard zoom — predating the D-type (ID 1146). Body-driven screw AF with push-pull zoom. No distance communication chip.
Same optical formula as the D version — constant f/2.8 with good sharpness throughout. The non-D lacks distance information for flash metering. Push-pull zoom mechanism. Body-driven AF. Macro mode at 35mm provides useful close-focus.
Nikon F mount with 62mm filter thread. Push-pull zoom. Body-driven AF — no motor on entry DSLRs. No D-chip. Approximately 665g. Full-frame coverage. Macro mode. Minimum focus distance approximately 60cm.
Available used very cheaply — cheaper than the D version. The lack of D-chip means less precise flash metering. For budget constant f/2.8 on bodies with AF motor. The D version (ID 1146) is slightly preferable for flash work.
