Nikon's professional AF telephoto zoom — the legendary 'two-ring' 80-200mm f/2.8D ED.
The Nikon AF Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D ED is one of Nikon's most iconic professional zoom lenses, often called the 'two-ring' for its separate zoom and focus rings. Released in 1997, it was the workhorse telephoto for Nikon professionals before the AF-S 70-200mm VR series. The constant f/2.8 aperture and ED glass made it the standard for sports and event photography.
Optical performance is very good. Sharpness is impressive from f/2.8 throughout the range. The ED element controls chromatic aberration effectively. Bokeh is smooth at wider apertures. The screw-drive AF system is fast on bodies with strong AF motors but noisy compared to later AF-S designs. The push-pull zoom mechanism on earlier versions was replaced by the two-ring design.
Nikon F mount with D-type aperture coupling. Filter thread is 77mm. Weight is approximately 1,300 grams — heavy but expected for a constant f/2.8 telephoto zoom. Build quality is outstanding professional grade with metal construction. No VR stabilisation — the main limitation compared to later AF-S versions. Requires a body-mounted AF motor.
Common on the used market at very attractive prices — often well under £500. Check AF accuracy and smooth zoom operation. The lack of VR is the primary reason for the low used price — the AF-S 70-200mm VR II and VR III have superseded it. Still an excellent professional telephoto for well-lit conditions. A legendary Nikon lens.
