Nikon's original VR super-telephoto zoom — screw-drive AF with push-pull zoom and first-generation vibration reduction.
The Nikon AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR (2000) was one of Nikon's first VR lenses, bringing stabilised super-telephoto reach to enthusiast photographers. Its push-pull zoom mechanism and screw-drive AF mark it as a product of a different era.
VR provides approximately 2 stops — first generation. ED glass for colour correction. Screw-drive AF is slow and noisy. Push-pull zoom barrel can become loose with age. Sharpness is acceptable at 80-300mm but softens at 400mm.
Nikon F mount, 77mm filter thread. D designation — screw-drive AF. 1360g weight. 230cm minimum focus distance. Compatible with TC-14E teleconverter. Push-pull zoom mechanism.
Cheap used. The AF-S 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR (2013) is dramatically superior with AF-S motor — strongly recommended instead. Check for loose push-pull barrel and VR mechanism noise.
