Nikon's legendary 85mm f/1.4D — the classic portrait prime with renowned bokeh and rendering.
The Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D launched in 1995 as a minor update to the original 85mm f/1.4. The D designation adds distance information for improved metering. It became one of the most beloved portrait lenses of the film and early digital era.
Optically excellent with a distinctive character — sharp from f/2 with a dreamy, creamy rendering at f/1.4 that many photographers consider superior to the technically sharper AF-S 85mm f/1.4G. The D-type bokeh rendering has a devoted following among portrait professionals.
Nikon F mount with 77mm filter thread. Approximately 550g. Screw-drive AF — requires camera body with AF motor. Full-frame coverage. 9 aperture blades — not rounded, creating slightly angular bokeh highlights. Minimum focus distance 85cm.
Available used at mid-range prices — the classic reputation maintains value. Screw-drive AF means no autofocus on entry-level DSLRs. The AF-S 85mm f/1.4G is technically better with ring USM and rounded blades. Some photographers specifically prefer the D version's character.
