Nikon's original AF 85mm f/1.8 — pre-D-type portrait prime for F-mount, the predecessor to the D version.
The Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 is the original autofocus version of Nikon's 85mm f/1.8, launched in 1987 as one of the first AF Nikkors. It predates the D-type version (85mm f/1.8D) and lacks the distance communication chip — otherwise very similar.
Optically good — essentially identical to the later D version. Sharp from f/2.5 with pleasant bokeh at f/1.8. Screw-drive AF requires camera body with AF motor. The non-D designation means no distance information for metering — less precise flash exposure.
Nikon F mount with 62mm filter thread. Approximately 380g. No VR stabilisation. Full-frame coverage. Minimum focus distance 85cm. 7 non-rounded aperture blades. Body-driven screw AF.
Available used very cheaply — even cheaper than the D version. The D version is worth the small premium for distance communication. The AF-S 85mm f/1.8G is dramatically better with ring USM and rounded blades. Only for budget portrait use on AF-motor-equipped Nikon bodies.
