Nikon's best DX kit zoom with stepping motor and VR, the one to get for video.
The Nikon AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR is Nikon's current-generation DX standard kit zoom, launched in 2016 and bundled with the D3400, D3500, and D5600. It adds VR stabilisation to the AF-P stepping motor and a redesigned optical formula, making it the most capable version of Nikon's 18-55mm DX lens across the family's production history. Covering a 27-82mm equivalent range, the redesigned optics deliver improved corner performance compared to the earlier AF-S VR versions, alongside the quieter, smoother AF of the stepping motor, particularly suited to video recording.
The optical design uses 12 elements in 9 groups with two aspherical elements, identical in formula to the non-VR AF-P variant. The VR mechanism adds vibration reduction rated at approximately 4 stops, significantly extending handheld viability at longer focal lengths and in lower light. The 55mm filter thread is less common than the 52mm and 67mm sizes across the Nikon DX lineup — a step-up ring will likely be needed for most standard filter collections. The AF-P pulse stepping motor provides near-silent, smooth autofocus for video recording. The retractable barrel keeps the lens compact when stored; a lock switch prevents accidental extension. Variable aperture runs from f/3.5 at 18mm to f/5.6 at 55mm. Build is lightweight plastic.
For everyday photography the 18-55mm covers landscapes, indoor shots, and casual portraits competently. VR enables slower shutter speeds beyond what the f/3.5-5.6 aperture alone would allow in moderate light. The stepping motor makes AF noticeably smoother in continuous live view and video tracking compared to older AF-S versions, which produced audible chatter on-screen. Image quality is strong across the centre and improved at the corners over the AF-S generation. The retractable barrel keeps the lens pocketed when attached to the body.
The critical purchase consideration is body compatibility: the AF-P stepping motor is not supported by older Nikon DSLRs including the D3200, D5200, D7100, and bodies from approximately 2013 and earlier — AF, VR, and stabilisation readout will not function correctly on incompatible bodies. Verify compatibility before purchasing. Condition checks: VR operation, AF motor response, and zoom ring smoothness. The retractable lock mechanism should engage and release cleanly. One of the strongest kit lens options in the APS-C DSLR category.
