Nikon's modern DX kit zoom — the AF-P 18-55mm with stepping motor for smooth video AF.
The Nikon AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR was released in 2016 as the final evolution of Nikon's DX kit zoom. The AF-P stepping motor provides significantly smoother, quieter autofocus than the earlier AF-S versions — a major improvement for video. VR stabilisation provides effective handheld shooting support. The retractable design keeps the lens compact.
Optical performance is good for a kit zoom — arguably the best iteration of Nikon's DX 18-55mm. Centre sharpness is respectable throughout the range. VR stabilisation is effective. The AF-P motor is virtually silent and buttery smooth, making it genuinely capable for video work. A meaningful improvement over all previous DX 18-55mm versions.
Nikon F mount, DX format. Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 205 grams — compact. Build quality is basic plastic with a retractable design. Note: AF-P lenses require Nikon bodies from approximately 2013 onwards for full compatibility — check your body before purchase. VR can be toggled via the camera menu rather than a physical switch.
Very affordable on the used market — often from kit splits. Check AF-P motor operation and VR function. Verify body compatibility. The best DX 18-55mm Nikon ever made — the AF-P motor makes it genuinely useful for video. The retractable design adds compactness. Highly recommended as a budget walk-around for compatible Nikon DX bodies.
