The Nikon AF-P DX 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR (2016) is a budget telephoto with a stepping motor — near-silent, fast AF well-suited to video. Its collapsible retractable design stores compactly. It replaced the AF-S 55-200mm as Nikon's DX budget tele.
Surprisingly good sharpness for the price. Centre is satisfying throughout the range. Stepping motor AF is genuinely fast and pleasant. VR provides approximately 4.5 stops of correction. ED glass controls chromatic aberration.
Nikon F mount, DX only — vignettes on FX. 58mm filter thread. The collapsible mechanism has a lock that must be released before shooting. Not compatible with some older Nikon bodies — check before buying. Non-VR version also exists.
Very common and affordable. Always confirm VR is present — the non-VR version looks nearly identical. Check the collapse mechanism locks smoothly. For the price, one of the best budget telephotos ever made for Nikon DX.
