Nikon's most affordable true macro lens, compact, sharp, and excellent value on DX bodies.
The Nikon AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G was introduced in 2011 as Nikon's entry-level macro lens. Providing 1:1 magnification at a 60mm equivalent focal length on DX bodies, it doubles as a compact standard prime. Its low price and small size made macro photography accessible to a wide audience of Nikon DX shooters.
Optical quality is excellent with razor sharpness at the focus plane from wide open and very good contrast. As a portrait lens it performs well at f/2.8 with pleasant if not exceptional bokeh. The AF-S motor is quiet but hunts at very close focus distances which is typical for macro lenses. Build is mostly plastic but feels solid.
Nikon F mount in DX format only with a 52mm filter thread. As a DX lens it does not cover the full-frame image circle. For FX bodies the AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED is the equivalent. There are no other mount variants.
Good value used. Check the AF motor, focus ring smoothness, and front element for scratches which are common on macro lenses that get close to subjects. The short 60mm-equivalent focal length means a very close working distance for macro which can shadow the subject.
