Nikon's professional DX ultra-wide zoom — note: the f/4 aperture, not f/1.4 as listed in database.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G ED is Nikon's professional-grade ultra-wide zoom for DX-format DSLRs, launched around 2005. Note that the correct maximum aperture is f/4, not f/1.4 as may appear in some listings — there is no f/1.4 zoom at this focal length. It covers an 18-36mm equivalent range, ideal for landscape and architecture on APS-C bodies.
Optical performance is very good for the class. Sharpness is excellent in the centre and good in the corners when stopped down. Distortion is well-controlled for an ultra-wide zoom, with only moderate barrel distortion at 12mm. The ED elements effectively suppress chromatic aberration. The constant f/4 aperture provides consistent exposure throughout the zoom range.
Nikon F mount, DX format only. Filter thread is 77mm. Weight is approximately 485 grams. AF-S silent wave motor provides fast, quiet autofocus with full-time manual override. Build quality is solid with a professional feel, though it lacks weather sealing. The G designation means no aperture ring — aperture controlled from the camera body.
Good availability on the used market at reasonable prices. Check for smooth zoom operation and AF accuracy. Still a capable ultra-wide for Nikon DX shooters, though the Nikon Z DX 12-28mm PZ has taken over for mirrorless users. The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 and 11-20mm f/2.8 offer faster alternatives at a wider field of view.
