The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR was released in 2015 as Nikon's premium standard zoom for DX-format DSLRs. Covering a 24-120mm equivalent range with a fast f/2.8 starting aperture, it was positioned as the best DX standard zoom Nikon offered — targeting serious enthusiasts and professionals who preferred DX format for its compactness and reach advantage.

Optical performance is excellent — arguably the best Nikon DX standard zoom ever made. Sharpness is outstanding throughout the range, even at the wider apertures. VR stabilisation provides approximately 4 stops of correction. The ED element controls chromatic aberration superbly. The f/2.8 starting aperture narrows to f/4 at the telephoto end but remains fast throughout.

Nikon F mount, DX format with Nano Crystal Coat for reduced flare. Filter thread is 72mm. Weight is approximately 480 grams. Build quality is premium with the E-type electromagnetic diaphragm and professional-grade construction. No weather sealing despite the premium positioning. The N in the designation indicates Nano Crystal Coat.
