Nikon's premium DX wide-to-telephoto zoom with VR, a versatile step up from the 18-55mm.

The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR was released as Nikon's higher-specification mid-range kit zoom for DX bodies, providing a 24-127mm full-frame equivalent range — wider than the standard 18-55mm at the short end and longer at the long end, covering a more comprehensive walking-around range. Vibration Reduction and AF-S SWM are included. The 67mm filter thread is consistent with the 18-105mm VR for filter carry-over in a standard Nikon DX two-lens kit.

The optical design uses 17 elements in 11 groups, including three aspherical and two ED elements. Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 67mm filter thread is the Nikon DX mid-range standard — consistent with the 18-105mm VR and 18-140mm VR. At 485g the lens is moderate for its zoom range. Minimum focus distance of 0.38m throughout. VR provides handheld stability for stills and casual video. AF-S SWM ensures compatibility with D40/D40x and all later motorless Nikon bodies. Variable aperture from f/3.5 at 16mm to f/5.6 at 85mm.

The 16-85mm's practical case over the standard 18-55mm kit lens is the extended range in both directions: the 24mm wide end (vs 27mm) enables slightly wider architectural and interior framing, and the 127mm long end (vs 82mm) extends to moderate telephoto reach without a second lens. For a single-lens everyday DX kit the 16-85mm VR covers more shooting scenarios than the 18-55mm. The 67mm filter thread shared with the 18-105mm enables filter carry-over.

On the used market the AF-S DX 16-85mm VR is available at moderate prices. Condition checks: VR engagement, AF-S motor response, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for marks. The 67mm filter thread is consistent with the 18-105mm VR and 18-140mm VR DX kit zooms. The 18-55mm VR remains cheaper and lighter for simple everyday use. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount DX and FX DSLR bodies; the DX image circle activates crop mode on FX at some focal lengths.
