Nikon's versatile DX standard zoom — the 18-140mm VR covering 27-210mm equivalent for travel.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR was released in 2013 as a versatile standard zoom for Nikon DX DSLRs. Covering a 27-210mm equivalent range with VR stabilisation, it offers significantly more reach than the basic 18-55mm while maintaining good optical quality. It was the kit lens for the D7100 and became the recommended upgrade from 18-55mm kits.
Optical performance is good — noticeably better than both the 18-55mm and most superzooms. Sharpness is very good throughout most of the range. VR stabilisation provides approximately 4 stops of correction, effective at the longer focal lengths. ED element controls chromatic aberration. AF-S motor is reasonably fast and quiet. A well-balanced all-rounder.
Nikon F mount, DX format. Filter thread is 67mm. Weight is approximately 490 grams — moderate. Build quality is solid above typical kit class. No weather sealing. The 18-140mm range hits a sweet spot — more versatile than 18-55mm but better optically than 18-200mm or 18-300mm superzooms. The G designation means camera-controlled aperture.
Common and affordable on the used market. Check VR operation and AF accuracy. One of the best DX standard zooms Nikon produced — the 27-210mm equivalent range with good optics and VR covers the vast majority of shooting situations. Highly recommended for Nikon DX shooters who want one versatile lens.
