Nikon's original DX superzoom with VR — the classic 27-300mm equivalent travel lens for Nikon DSLRs.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR was released in 2005 and became one of the most popular DX lenses Nikon ever produced. Covering a 27-300mm equivalent range with VR stabilisation, it was the definitive travel lens for Nikon APS-C shooters. Demand was so high at launch that it was backordered for months.
Optical performance is good for a superzoom of this era. Sharpness is respectable in the centre throughout the range, with the expected softening at extreme focal lengths and corners. VR stabilisation provides approximately 3 stops of correction in the original, improved to 4 stops in the VR II version. AF-S motor is reasonably fast and quiet.
Nikon F mount, DX format. Filter thread is 72mm. Weight is approximately 560 grams. Build quality is solid with a zoom lock switch to prevent creep. The VR II version released in 2009 improved stabilisation and added a zoom lock. ED elements help control chromatic aberration. No weather sealing on either version.
Very common on the used market at low prices. Check for zoom creep — a known issue, especially on the original version. VR operation should be smooth and quiet. The VR II version is preferred. Still a perfectly usable travel lens for Nikon DX shooters, though mirrorless alternatives now offer better image quality.
