Nikon's original DX superzoom, a pioneering all-in-one that defined the travel lens category.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED VR was introduced in 2005 as Nikon's first DX superzoom with Vibration Reduction — then marketed as the VR Zoom-Nikkor — providing a 27-300mm full-frame equivalent range. The combination of AF-S Silent Wave Motor, VR, and internal focus (IF, which maintains a constant barrel length during focus changes) in a consumer superzoom was a notable advance at launch. A VR II version followed with improved stabilisation algorithms. This master covers the original first-version VR.
The optical design uses 16 elements in 12 groups, including two ED elements and three aspherical elements. Seven aperture blades produce acceptable out-of-focus rendering at wider apertures. The 72mm filter thread is consistent with several Nikon mid-range zoom lenses including the 18-135mm and 18-70mm G, enabling filter carry-over across a Nikon DX zoom kit. At 560g the lens is manageable for travel use. Minimum focus distance of 0.5m suits the telephoto use case. VR provides approximately 4 stops of shake compensation for handheld telephoto shooting. AF-S SWM ensures compatibility with D40/D40x and later motorless bodies.
The 18-200mm VR's practical case is the same as all superzooms: the 27-300mm equivalent in a single mount eliminates lens changes for the most commonly photographed range from wide environmental shots through telephoto. VR extends handheld capability at 200mm in available light — practically meaningful for outdoor travel photography in varying conditions. The IF design maintains a constant barrel length during focus changes, avoiding front element rotation that would complicate circular polariser use. Optical quality is adequate at mid-apertures; superzoom compromises are most apparent at the extremes.
On the used market the original 18-200mm VR is widely available and affordable. The VR II version provides improved stabilisation at a modest premium — worth the small additional cost if available. Condition checks: VR engagement, AF-S motor response at both zoom extremes, zoom ring smoothness — superzoom designs are susceptible to zoom creep over time — and front element for cleaning marks. The 72mm filter thread is consistent with the 18-70mm G and 18-135mm G. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount DX and FX DSLR bodies; a DX crop is recommended on FX bodies at wide focal lengths.
