Nikon's original DX superzoom, a pioneering all-in-one that defined the travel lens category.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED VR was launched in 2005 and effectively created the superzoom travel lens category. Covering a 27-300mm equivalent range in one lens with VR stabilisation, it was so popular that it sold out immediately and commanded premium prices for months.
Optical quality follows the superzoom pattern with good centre sharpness at moderate focal lengths, softening at the extremes. VR provides approximately 4 stops. IF design means constant lens length. ED glass controls chromatic aberration. The 11x zoom ratio was revolutionary for its time.
Nikon F mount in DX format only, 72mm filter thread. The VR II version succeeded it with improved optics and a zoom lock. The Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR offers a more practical range with better optics at lower weight.
Cheap used given its age. Check for zoom creep where the barrel extends under its own weight when pointed downward. Test VR operation and AF motor. The zoom lock switch prevents creep. A historical lens that defined a category but is now outperformed by newer alternatives.
