Nikon's updated DX superzoom with improved VR II stabilisation and zoom lock.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED VR II is the updated version of Nikon's pioneering superzoom, launched around 2009. It added improved VR II stabilisation and a zoom lock switch to address the original's zoom creep issue. The 27-300mm equivalent range remains one of the most versatile in any DX zoom.
Optical quality follows the same superzoom pattern as the original with good centre sharpness at moderate focal lengths and softening at the extremes. VR II provides approximately 4 stops of improved stabilisation. The zoom lock switch at 18mm prevents the barrel from extending under gravity.
Nikon F mount in DX format only, 72mm filter thread. The 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR offers a more practical range with better optics at lower weight. The original 18-200mm VR remains available at lower used prices.
Moderate value used. Check the zoom lock mechanism and VR II operation. Test for zoom creep by holding the lens pointed downward. The 18-140mm VR is generally a better balanced lens. The 18-200mm is justified only when the extra reach to 300mm equivalent is genuinely needed.
