Nikon's premium DX superzoom — the 18-300mm VR covering 27-450mm equivalent in one lens.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR was released in 2012 as Nikon's ultimate DX superzoom, replacing the popular 18-200mm VR. Covering a 27-450mm equivalent range, it provides the widest zoom ratio available in a Nikon DX lens — a genuine one-lens solution for travel photographers who want maximum versatility without lens changes.
Optical performance is good for a superzoom of this ratio. Sharpness is respectable in the centre throughout the range, with the expected softening at the extreme telephoto end. VR stabilisation provides approximately 3.5 stops of correction, essential at longer focal lengths. ED elements help control chromatic aberration. AF-S motor is reasonably fast and quiet.
Nikon F mount, DX format. Filter thread is 77mm. Weight is approximately 830 grams — heavy for a DX lens but expected given the enormous range. Build quality is solid above typical kit-class quality. No weather sealing. A lighter f/3.5-6.3 version was released later with reduced size and weight at the cost of slightly smaller aperture.
Good availability on the used market at reasonable prices. Check for smooth VR operation, zoom creep, and AF accuracy. The 77mm filter thread adds filter cost. An excellent travel companion for Nikon DX shooters who value convenience above all else. The 18-140mm VR offers better per-focal-length quality in a lighter package.
