Nikon's lighter DX superzoom variant — the 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 with slower aperture but reduced weight.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR is the lighter, more compact version of Nikon's DX superzoom, released in 2014. Compared to the f/3.5-5.6 version, it trades half a stop of aperture at the telephoto end for significantly reduced size and weight. It covers a 27-450mm equivalent range — the same reach in a more portable package.
Optical performance is similar to the heavier version. Centre sharpness is respectable throughout the range with softening at extremes. VR stabilisation provides approximately 4 stops of correction. The slower f/6.3 maximum aperture at 300mm requires more light but the trade-off in size and weight is worthwhile for travel use. ED elements control chromatic aberration.
Nikon F mount, DX format. Filter thread is 67mm — smaller than the f/3.5-5.6 version's 77mm. Weight is approximately 550 grams — nearly 300 grams lighter than the heavier version. Build quality is good. No weather sealing. The retractable design requires unlocking before use. A zoom lock prevents creep when carrying.
Available on the used market at reasonable prices. Check VR operation and zoom mechanism. The lighter weight makes it the preferred choice for travel over the f/3.5-5.6 version. The 27-450mm equivalent range in a 550-gram package is genuinely impressive for single-lens travel photography.
