Nikon's extreme DX superzoom covering an ambitious 27-450mm equivalent range with VR.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR is Nikon's most extreme DX superzoom, launched around 2014. Covering a remarkable 27-450mm equivalent range, it is the ultimate one-lens travel solution for Nikon DX shooters who refuse to carry multiple lenses.
Optical quality follows the typical superzoom pattern amplified by the extreme 16.7x ratio. Centre sharpness is acceptable at moderate focal lengths but corners and telephoto extremes suffer. VR provides approximately 4 stops. ED glass helps with chromatic aberration. AF-S motor is quiet.
Nikon F mount in DX format only, 67mm filter thread. The 18-140mm VR covers a more practical range with better optics. The 18-200mm VR II splits the difference. The 18-300mm is for maximum range with maximum compromise.
Moderate value used. Check VR, zoom ring for creep, and sharpness at 300mm. The extreme range is the selling point but optical quality suffers. For better results pair the 18-55mm with a telephoto zoom instead.
