Nikon's basic DX kit zoom — the standard 27-82mm equivalent lens supplied with entry-level Nikon DSLRs.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G is the standard kit zoom supplied with entry-level Nikon DX DSLRs including the D3000 and D5000 series. Multiple versions exist — the original, VR, VR II, and AF-P variants — each improving on stabilisation and autofocus. It covers a 27-82mm equivalent range for basic wide-to-short-telephoto photography.
Optical performance is typical of kit zooms. Centre sharpness is acceptable and improves when stopped down. Corner performance is soft wide open but adequate by f/8. Later VR versions add effective stabilisation. The AF-S motor provides quiet autofocus with full-time manual override. Not designed for demanding work, but perfectly functional for learning photography.
Nikon F mount, DX format. Filter thread is 52mm. Weight is approximately 205 grams — lightweight. Build quality is basic plastic with a metal mount. No weather sealing. The VR versions add vibration reduction. The AF-P version uses a stepping motor with smoother, quieter AF suited to video. Several generations span from 2005 to 2016.
Extremely common and very cheap on the used market — often sold for under £20. Check for smooth zoom and AF operation. A perfectly adequate starter lens but any serious Nikon shooter should plan to upgrade. The Nikon 18-140mm VR or 16-85mm VR are significant improvements at modest cost.
