Nikon's early premium DX kit zoom with faster aperture and professional-grade build.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED was introduced around 2004 as a premium kit lens bundled with the D70 and D200. With a faster f/3.5-4.5 aperture and internal focusing, it offered a step up from the basic 18-55mm kit zoom. The 27-105mm equivalent range provides extra telephoto reach.
Optical quality is good for its era with solid sharpness and well-controlled chromatic aberration thanks to ED glass. The IF design means the lens does not extend during focusing. AF-S motor is quiet and reliable. Build quality is a clear step above the 18-55mm with a more substantial barrel and metal mount.
Nikon F mount in DX format only, 67mm filter thread. This was an early DX lens that predates VR. The 18-105mm VR successor added stabilisation and more reach. The 18-70mm remains respected for its faster aperture at the wide end.
Cheap used given its age. Check AF-S motor and zoom ring for smoothness. The lack of VR is the main limitation. A solid performer if found cheaply but the 18-105mm VR or AF-P 18-55mm VR are better modern choices.
