Nikon's beloved DX standard prime, the most recommended first prime for Nikon APS-C shooters.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G was introduced in 2009 as the first affordable native DX standard prime with an AF-S Silent Wave Motor — enabling autofocus on D40, D40x, and D60 bodies that lacked the internal AF drive motor required by older AF-D lenses. The 52mm full-frame equivalent on DX provides a near-standard perspective suited for portraiture, documentary, and everyday photography. The combination of f/1.8 maximum aperture, AF-S motor, and low price made it the most widely used DX prime in the Nikon lineup for several years after introduction.
The optical design uses 8 elements in 6 groups, including one aspherical element. Seven rounded aperture blades produce acceptable out-of-focus rendering at wider apertures. The 52mm filter thread is the Nikon DX kit standard — consistent with the 18-55mm AF-S DX kit zoom, enabling filter carry-over in a two-lens kit. At approximately 200g the lens adds minimal weight to any DX body. Minimum focus distance of 0.25m enables informal close-up framing on small subjects. There is no Vibration Reduction. The AF-S Silent Wave Motor provides fast, quiet autofocus independent of the camera body's AF motor, ensuring compatibility with D40/D40x and later motorless Nikon bodies.
The 35mm f/1.8G DX's practical case is the combination of near-standard perspective, f/1.8 aperture, and very low cost in an AF-S package that works across the full range of Nikon F-mount DSLRs. The f/1.8 maximum aperture provides subject separation and low-light capability that the kit zoom at f/5.6 cannot approach. For portraits at 52mm equivalent the depth of field is shallow enough for subject-background separation without the critical focus demands of f/1.4 primes. The 200g weight means the lens is practical to carry on a DX body without meaningful bulk addition.
On the used market the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX is one of the most affordable fast primes available. Condition checks: AF motor response, aperture ring operation, and front element for cleaning marks. There is no weather sealing. The DX designation means the lens is designed for APS-C sensors; on FX full-frame bodies it activates DX crop mode. The Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8G FX version provides full-frame coverage at a higher price. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount DX and FX DSLR bodies.
