Early Nikon DX telephoto kit zoom without VR, basic but lightweight.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED was introduced in 2005 as the standard telephoto companion to Nikon's 18-55mm DX kit zoom, designed to extend coverage from the standard range into moderate telephoto for entry DX systems. The AF-S Silent Wave Motor enabled compatibility with D40 and D40x, which Nikon bundled with this lens — those bodies lacked an internal AF drive motor and required AF-S lenses for autofocus. The 82-300mm equivalent field of view on DX covers outdoor events through birds at moderate distance. A VR (Vibration Reduction) variant was released subsequently.
The optical design uses 13 elements in 9 groups, including one ED element for chromatic aberration control at the telephoto end. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering. The 52mm filter thread is shared with the Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm kit zoom — a single filter set covers both lenses. At 255g the lens adds minimal weight to a compact DX body. Minimum focus distance of 0.95m is appropriate for telephoto subject distances. Variable aperture runs from f/4 at 55mm to f/5.6 at 200mm — consistent with DX telephoto kit lens norms. There is no Vibration Reduction; the VR variant provides shake correction for handheld telephoto work. Build is lightweight plastic with a metal mount ring; no weather sealing.
The 55-200mm's practical role is as the telephoto half of a Nikon DX two-lens kit — paired with the 18-55mm DX kit zoom it covers 27-300mm equivalent with no focal length gap and a shared 52mm filter thread. For entry DX users the combination provides adequate outdoor telephoto reach for events, travel, and casual wildlife. The absence of VR is the primary limitation for handheld telephoto use at 200mm: in lower light or at the end of a long shoot, the VR variant provides meaningful additional handheld stability. AF is fast and quiet via SWM on D40/D40x and all later AF-capable Nikon DSLRs.
On the used market the original non-VR 55-200mm is among the least expensive AF-S DX Nikkor telephoto options. The AF-S DX 55-200mm VR II adds Vibration Reduction at a modest premium — for most buyers seeking a used DX telephoto kit zoom, the VR version is worth the small additional cost if available. Condition checks: AF motor response at both ends of the zoom range, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for cleaning marks. The 52mm filter thread is consistent with the 18-55mm DX kit lens — a single polarising filter covers both. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount DX and FX DSLRs.
