Early Nikon DX telephoto kit zoom without VR, basic but lightweight.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED was launched around 2005 as Nikon's earliest dedicated DX telephoto zoom. Providing an 82-300mm equivalent range, it was designed as a lightweight companion to the 18-55mm kit lens.
Optical quality is basic with acceptable sharpness at shorter focal lengths and softness at 200mm. ED glass helps control chromatic aberration. There is no VR stabilisation which is the main limitation. AF-S motor is quiet and works on all DX bodies. Build is lightweight plastic.
Nikon F mount in DX format only, 52mm filter thread. The VR version that followed is a significantly better lens due to the addition of stabilisation. This non-VR version is now largely obsolete.
Very cheap used and largely outclassed by the VR and VR II versions. Only worth buying if VR versions are unavailable. Check AF motor operation and zoom ring smoothness.
