Nikon's retractable DX telephoto with improved optics and VR II stabilisation.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II launched in 2015 as the retractable update to the popular VR version. With improved optics and VR II stabilisation in a more compact stored form, it refined the formula while keeping the budget price.
Optical quality is marginally improved over the VR I with slightly better corners. VR II provides about 4 stops of stabilisation. The retractable design collapses the lens for compact storage. Build uses a plastic mount, a cost-cutting measure from the VR I's metal mount.
Nikon F mount in DX format, 52mm filter thread. The AF-P DX 70-300mm VR succeeded the 55-200mm range with a quieter stepping motor. The VR II's retractable design is its unique feature.
Cheap used. Check the plastic mount for play or cracks, retractable mechanism, and VR operation. The AF-P 70-300mm VR is the better modern choice. The VR II is adequate if found cheaply.
