Nikon's DX telephoto zoom with extended 300mm reach and VR stabilisation.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR was launched around 2010 as Nikon's longest DX telephoto zoom. Covering an 82-450mm equivalent range with VR stabilisation, it provides extreme telephoto reach for budget-conscious DX shooters interested in wildlife and sports.
Optical quality is adequate at shorter focal lengths but softens noticeably at 300mm. VR provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. The AF-S motor is quiet and works on all DX bodies. ED glass helps control chromatic aberration. Build is plastic and lightweight.
Nikon F mount in DX format only, 58mm filter thread. The AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR succeeded it with a quieter stepping motor and improved optics. The 55-200mm VR covers less range but is optically sharper.
Cheap used. Check VR operation and AF motor. Test sharpness at 300mm which is the weak point. The AF-P 70-300mm VR is a better lens if your body supports AF-P. The extended range makes this useful for daylight wildlife on a budget.
