Nikon's flagship macro lens with VR, exceptional sharpness, and a beautiful rendering character.
The Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR was released in 2006 as Nikon's professional 1:1 macro prime with the addition of Vibration Reduction — the first macro lens with built-in VR. The 105mm focal length provides longer working distance than shorter macro alternatives, practical for subjects that cannot tolerate a close approach. IF (Internal Focus) maintains a constant barrel length at all focus distances. The combination of 1:1 magnification, 105mm working distance, and VR established it as the reference macro for Nikon DSLR systems.
The optical design uses 14 elements in 12 groups. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 62mm filter thread is standard. At 790g the lens is substantial for a macro prime. Minimum focus distance of 0.31m achieves 1:1 magnification. VR provides handheld stability for macro work, enabling shots that would require a tripod without stabilisation. IF maintains a constant barrel length — the front element does not rotate or extend during focus, enabling use of circular polarisers and ring flash without front-element movement. AF-S SWM provides quiet AF.
The 105mm working distance at 1:1 magnification provides greater physical distance between the lens front element and the subject than 60mm or shorter macros: at 1:1, the 105mm lens is approximately 14cm from the subject at minimum focus, versus approximately 7-8cm for a 60mm macro. This clearance is practical for live insects, small flowers, and product photography where lighting access and subject disturbance are considerations. VR extends handheld macro capability for travel and fieldwork.
On the used market the AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G VR is widely available at professional macro pricing. Condition checks: AF motor response (confirm smooth focus pull from infinity to 1:1), VR engagement, IF barrel smoothness, and front element condition. The Nikon Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S provides the native Z-mount macro equivalent. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount bodies that include an AF drive motor or work with AF-S lenses.
