Nikon's full-frame wide-angle zoom with VR — the professional 16-35mm f/4 for landscape and architecture.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR was released in 2010 as Nikon's professional wide-angle zoom with VR stabilisation. Covering the essential ultra-wide to moderate wide range at a constant f/4, it offered VR-equipped wide-angle zoom coverage that the faster 14-24mm f/2.8 lacked. It became the go-to wide-angle zoom for Nikon landscape photographers.
Optical performance is very good. Sharpness is excellent across the frame, particularly from 20-35mm. The VR system provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation — unusual and valuable for a wide-angle zoom, enabling slower shutter speeds for landscape and interior work. ED elements control chromatic aberration. Nano Crystal Coat reduces ghosting and flare.
Nikon F mount, full-frame. Filter thread is 77mm — accepts standard filters, unlike the 14-24mm f/2.8. Weight is approximately 680 grams. Build quality is professional with weather sealing. The Nano Crystal Coat and ED elements provide premium optical characteristics. The constant f/4 aperture ensures consistent exposure throughout the range.
Good availability on the used market at reasonable prices. Check VR operation and AF accuracy. The ability to use front filters is a significant advantage over the 14-24mm f/2.8 for landscape photographers who use ND and polarising filters. The Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S is the mirrorless successor. Still excellent for Nikon DSLR shooters.
