Nikon's constant-aperture ultra-wide zoom with VR, a workhorse for landscape and architecture.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR was released in 2010 as a professional wide-angle zoom for Nikon full-frame FX bodies, competing against Canon's EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM in the constant-aperture ultra-wide zoom category. The combination of VR stabilisation and f/4 maximum aperture made it well-suited to handheld architectural and landscape photography where the lighter weight and reduced cost of f/4 over f/2.8 is an acceptable trade. The Nano Crystal Coat reduces flare and ghosting in backlit conditions.
The optical design uses 17 elements in 12 groups, including three ED elements and three aspherical elements. The 77mm filter thread is the professional standard, consistent with Nikon's FX telephoto and standard zoom L-class lenses. At approximately 680g the lens is moderate in weight for a professional full-frame ultra-wide. A minimum focus distance of 0.28m enables close environmental and architectural detail framing at any focal length in the range. VR provides approximately 4 stops of shake compensation, practical for handheld interior and low-light wide-angle work where a tripod may not be available. The AF-S Silent Wave Motor is quiet with full-time manual focus override.
For landscape, architectural, and interior photography the 16-35mm f/4 provides a useful range of wide perspectives, from 16mm environmental context to 35mm standard coverage, with VR extending handheld capability in lower light. The 0.28m minimum focus throughout the range allows close foreground elements to fill the frame with full wide-angle background context — a technique associated with ultra-wide landscape composition. Optical quality is strong across the range; some coma at the frame corners at 16mm wide open is expected for this lens category.
On the used market the 16-35mm f/4G VR is widely available. Condition checks: VR engagement, AF motor response, and front element for cleaning marks that affect contrast in wide-angle backlit shooting. The 77mm filter thread is consistent with other Nikon professional glass. The Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S is the native Z-mount wide-angle standard for Z-system users, providing a wider range. Via FTZ or FTZ II adapter the 16-35mm performs on Z-mount bodies with full VR function.
