Nikon's professional full-frame ultra-wide zoom — a gold-ring workhorse for photojournalists and landscape shooters.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED launched in 1999 as Nikon's professional ultra-wide zoom for the F-mount system. It was a gold-ring staple for photojournalists and landscape photographers throughout the film-to-digital transition era.
Optical quality is good — sharp in the centre with some edge softness at 17mm that improves significantly by f/5.6. The constant f/2.8 aperture is excellent for low-light work. ED glass controls chromatic aberration. IF (Internal Focus) keeps barrel length constant.
Nikon F mount with 77mm filter thread. Weighs 745g. No VR stabilisation. Full-frame coverage. Professional-grade build with weather sealing. D designation means it communicates distance data. Minimum focus distance 28cm — useful for environmental shots.
Available used at reasonable prices. The AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G replaced it in Nikon's lineup with clearly superior optics. Still useful on FX bodies. Check for dust and haze in the optical assembly — common on these older pro zooms after years of use.
