Nikon's compact full-frame ultra-wide zoom — lightweight 18-35mm with ED glass at a budget price.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED launched in 2014 as a compact, affordable ultra-wide zoom for Nikon FX-format cameras. It provides wider-than-usual 18mm at the wide end while remaining significantly smaller and lighter than the 14-24mm f/2.8G.
Optically good — sharp in the centre throughout with acceptable edge performance at mid-apertures. The variable aperture limits low-light use but the IF-ED designation with ED glass helps control chromatic aberration. AF-S motor is fast and quiet. Internal focus design.
Nikon F mount with 77mm filter thread. Weighs just 385g — remarkably light for a full-frame ultra-wide zoom. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 28cm. G-type — electronically controlled aperture. Plastic barrel construction keeps weight down.
Available used at budget to mid-range prices. The light weight and compact size make it ideal for travel. The 14-24mm f/2.8G is optically superior but much larger and heavier. Check for smooth zoom and focus action. A practical ultra-wide for Nikon FX shooters on a budget.
