Nikon's affordable full-frame super-telephoto zoom with VR and constant f/5.6 aperture.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR launched in 2015 as an affordable super-telephoto zoom with a constant f/5.6 aperture. Reaching 500mm with VR and ED glass at a consumer price, it democratised super-telephoto photography for wildlife and bird photographers on a budget.
Optical quality is good with sharp results particularly at 200-400mm. VR provides approximately 4.5 stops with a Sport mode for erratic subject tracking. The constant f/5.6 maintains consistent exposure across the range. Build is solid but not weather sealed. The lens is large and heavy at 2300g.
Nikon F mount, 95mm filter thread. Compatible with the TC-14E III 1.4x teleconverter for 700mm reach at f/8. The Sigma and Tamron 150-600mm zooms offer more reach at variable apertures. The Nikon's constant f/5.6 is its distinguishing feature.
Good value used. Check VR in both Normal and Sport modes, AF speed at 500mm, and the tripod collar. The weight demands a tripod or monopod for extended use. One of the best value super-telephoto options for Nikon F-mount wildlife photographers.
