Nikon's full-frame standard zoom workhorse, a constant f/4 alternative to the pro 24-70mm f/2.8.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR is Nikon's versatile full-frame standard zoom, launched in 2010. Covering a wider 24-120mm range versus the traditional 24-70mm, it trades one stop of aperture for significantly more telephoto reach. It was commonly bundled with the D750 and D810.
Optical quality is good with sharp centre performance across the range. VR provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation which helps compensate for the slower f/4 aperture. The constant f/4 maintains consistent exposure throughout the zoom range. AF-S motor is fast and quiet. Build is solid with a metal mount and weather sealing.
Nikon F mount only, 77mm filter thread. This is Nikon's answer to the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and competes in the same space. The Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G or E VR offers a wider aperture but less reach. The Z 24-120mm f/4 S is the mirrorless successor.
Good value used. Check VR operation, zoom ring for creep at longer focal lengths, and AF motor. The extra reach compared to a 24-70mm makes this an excellent travel and event lens. The 77mm filter size matches many of Nikon's professional lenses for filter sharing.
