Nikon's professional fast standard zoom, a workhorse for wedding and event photographers.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G IF-ED is Nikon's first-generation professional standard zoom, launched in 2007 to replace the AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8D. It became the default zoom for Nikon professional photographers covering weddings, events, and editorial work — the constant f/2.8 aperture and gold ring indicate the professional lens tier. The 24mm wide end provided meaningful improvement over the 28mm of its predecessor for environmental and group coverage. It established the template for Nikon's professional standard zoom and remained the primary choice for nearly a decade until the 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR appeared in 2015.
The optical design uses 15 elements in 11 groups. Nano Crystal Coat is applied to reduce flare and ghosting in backlit conditions. The 77mm filter thread is the professional standard size, compatible with most established filter collections for Nikon telephoto and pro lenses. At 900g the lens is substantial for extended handheld shooting — consistent with other professional f/2.8 standard zooms. The IF (Internal Focus) design keeps the barrel length constant and prevents front element rotation — useful for polarising filters. A rubber gasket at the lens mount provides limited protection; Nikon does not officially classify this lens as weather sealed. The G designation indicates no aperture ring. The AF-S Silent Wave Motor is fast and silent with full-time manual focus override. Maximum aperture is f/2.8 throughout the zoom range.
In professional use the 24-70mm f/2.8G delivers reliable image quality across events, portraiture, and documentary assignments. Centre sharpness is excellent across the zoom range; corner performance is softer but acceptable for professional applications. At f/2.8 the lens performs well in indoor event lighting without requiring extreme ISO settings. The 900g weight is standard for professional f/2.8 standard zooms but requires consideration for all-day carry. The absence of VR is the primary practical limitation compared to the later E VR version — handheld at slower shutter speeds requires careful technique.
On the used market the 24-70mm f/2.8G offers strong value for professional FX and DX shooting. The AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR (2015) is the successor with VR and improved optics at a higher price — the preferred choice for users requiring stabilisation. Condition checks: zoom ring smoothness (stiffening with age is common), AF motor function, and inspection for internal dust or delamination. Via the FTZ adapter the G version works on Nikon Z-mount bodies. The Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is the native mirrorless equivalent.
