Nikon's affordable full-frame standard zoom with VR, a budget alternative to the 24-70mm f/2.8.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR was released in 2012 as a mid-range kit zoom for Nikon FX full-frame bodies, providing a 36-127mm full-frame equivalent range with Vibration Reduction. It serves as the standard kit lens for the D600 and D610 bodies. The AF-S SWM enables compatibility with all Nikon F-mount bodies including those without an internal AF motor. VR provides handheld stability across the zoom range.
The optical design uses 16 elements in 11 groups, including ED elements. Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 72mm filter thread is shared with several Nikon FX mid-range zooms. At 465g the lens is moderate for a VR-equipped standard zoom. Minimum focus distance of 0.38m. VR provides handheld stability. AF-S SWM enables motorless body compatibility. Variable aperture from f/3.5 at 24mm to f/4.5 at 85mm. ED elements reduce chromatic aberration through the zoom range.
The 36-127mm full-frame equivalent range covers wide-angle through short portrait telephoto in a single kit lens. For photographers using a D600, D610, or D750 as an all-around full-frame body, the 24-85mm VR provides a practical single-lens travel solution. The VR mechanism enables handheld shooting at the 85mm end in lower-light conditions where 1/85s is marginal. The 72mm filter thread is consistent with other Nikon FX zoom lenses.
On the used market the AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR is affordable as a standard FX kit zoom with VR. Condition checks: VR engagement, AF-S motor response, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for marks. The Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G and f/4G provide constant aperture for more demanding use. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount FX and DX bodies; on DX the 36-127mm equivalent covers the standard walk-around range.
