Nikon's compact full-frame standard zoom with VR — budget 24-85mm for FX bodies.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED VR launched around 2012 as an affordable standard zoom for Nikon FX-format bodies. It was commonly bundled with the D600 and D610 as the budget kit zoom, offering VR stabilisation and full-frame coverage.
Optically adequate — sharp in the centre at mid-apertures but with noticeable edge softness on full-frame. VR provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation — a useful addition. AF-S motor is fast and quiet. ED glass helps control chromatic aberration. IF internal focus.
Nikon F mount with 72mm filter thread. Weighs approximately 465g — lightweight for full-frame. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 38cm. G-type. Variable f/3.5-4.5 aperture. Plastic barrel construction.
Available used very cheaply — often bundled with D600/D610 bodies. The 24-120mm f/4G VR is much better with constant aperture and more range. Adequate as a starter full-frame zoom. Check for smooth zoom and VR operation. A budget stepping stone to better glass.
