Nikon's professional 300mm — the earlier AF-S D version without VR stabilisation.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED is an earlier version of Nikon's professional super-telephoto described under ID 3802 as the 'II'. This original version provided outstanding optics with the first-generation AF-S silent wave motor. The D-type coupling ensures full Nikon metering. No VR — the main limitation compared to later versions.
Optical performance is outstanding — professional-grade optics that served press and sports photographers. Sharpness is excellent from f/2.8. ED glass provides superb chromatic correction. The AF-S motor is fast and quiet. IF design keeps barrel length constant. Compatible with Nikon teleconverters for extended reach.
Nikon F mount with D-type coupling. Rear drop-in filter. Weight is approximately 2,600 grams — heavy. Build quality is professional grade. No VR — the VR II version succeeded. Tripod collar. The first version is lighter and more affordable than the Mark II while providing comparable optics.
Available at very attractive prices — two generations of VR successors reduce demand. Check AF motor and optics. Outstanding professional optics at bargain used pricing. The lack of VR is the main drawback. Best for tripod-based work. One of the best value super-telephoto investments available.
