Nikon's professional 500mm f/4 — gold-ring super-telephoto with VR for wildlife and sports.

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/4G ED VR was released approximately 2007 as Nikon's professional super-telephoto prime with the first VR (vibration reduction) in the 500mm f/4 design. G-type (no aperture ring); AF-S silent wave motor; ED glass. Nikon F mount.

f/4 constant aperture. 500mm focal length. G-type (no aperture ring). AF-S (silent wave motor). VR (vibration reduction). ED glass. At approximately 3,880g. Drop-in filter slot. Nikon F mount.

The VR system provides approximately three stops of stabilisation, enabling longer handheld exposures at 500mm than unstabilised predecessors. ED glass reduces chromatic aberration at f/4 in high-contrast telephoto subjects. The 500mm f/4G VR was succeeded by the 500mm f/4E FL ED VR (2016) with fluorite elements and improved VR.
